Nicaea, now Iznik, Turkey, located on the eastern shore of Lake Ascania, was founded by Antigonus I, King of Macedonia. Later it flourished under the Romans. It is famous in ecclesiastical histroy for the two councils of Nicaea.
The "first" of all "Ecumenical" councils was convened in 325 A.D. in Nicaea by Constantine I, Emperor of Rome. Of the 1800 Bishops in the Roman Empire, 318 attended the council. This council took place during the time of the "Third" Church Age (312 - 606 A.D.) as recorded in Rev. 2:12-17. It is recorded that during this age "False Doctrine" was beginning to undermine the Faith of the True Church. A "False Church" with "false doctrines" was evolving as the world entered what was to become known as the "Dark Ages". Instead of walking by Faith, the church entered a world governed by man-made creeds and commandments of men.
Concering this the Bible says.....
14. But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
Out of this 'first' Nicaean Coucil came such false teachings as "The Nicene Creed", the "Easter celebration", and the infamous "Trinity" teaching that there are 'Three Persons' in the Godhead, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory. But as we shall eventually see when we return to the page on the Trinity - this teaching, along with many others which were sanctioned by Constantine and his 318 Bishops, is absolutely 'unscriptural'.
The "second" of the Councils held at Nicaea in 787 A.D. was the "seventh" ecumenical council. This was convened by Irene, Empress of the East. This council was attended by 350 Bishops, most of whom were Byzantine. This council took place during the time of the "Fourth" Church Age (606 - 1520 A.D.) as recorded in Rev. 2:18-29. It is recorded that during this age a "False Prophetess" (church) was teaching false doctrine within the True Church, causing God's servants to commit spiritual fornication and eat (accept) things sacrificed to idols.
Concerning this Age the Bible says.....
20. Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols..... .......................................................................................................Revelation 2:20.
The Church which had 'evolved' through 'the deeds of the Nicolaitanes' in the first Age, 'false brethren' of the 'synagogue of Satan' in the second Age, 'false doctrine' in the third Age, and a 'false prophetess' with 'idols' in the fourth Age, was none other than the Roman Catholic Church - the first 'organized, denominational' church.
Out of this second council at Nicaea came forth the veneration - worship of 'images' (idols) - a complete anti-Scriptural teaching. Thus was this practice brought into the Roman Catholic Church throughout all the Roman Empire and it continues yet today in this modern age. The Lincoln Library Of Essential Information (1977) indicates that many of the 'Christian' celebrations have their roots in 'paganism'.
And in spite of what God has done (by sending a Prophet) to enlighten this generation to the Truth about, denominations, Christmas, Easter, the Trinity and other pagan teachings, Catholics and Protestants alike still "hold dearly" to these things. But we're fast approaching the time when "that which God has winked at through the centuries, He will wink at no more, but commands ALL men to repent of it."
Historically, we know the roots of the "Trinity" teaching. let's return to our previous page to judge it by the Bible - Word of God.....
